Buoyed by a change of manager and another opportunistic end for Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League with a win over Villarreal on Tuesday. However, another newly appointed coach is working to bring Barcelona down to the eighth place.
United was led by Michael Carrick after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked over the weekend and, like his predecessor, the interim coach had to be grateful for a goal scored by a Champions League record scorer.
Three-time European champions Manchester United needed a win at all costs to stay in the top two of Group F. But the defeat could have added to their troubles and hence the football team was under pressure as well. In the match, David Di Gea stopped two important goals while Ronaldo played a key role in scoring. Ronaldo has so far scored in all five group matches and now has an extended record of 140 goals in the Champions League in his career.
Both the teams were tied at half time but after that Ronaldo opened the team’s account by scoring in the 78th minute. In the 90th minute of the match, Jadon Sancho scored another goal to bring United closer to victory. Ronaldo scored the 799th goal of his career, 140th in the Champions League, and sixth of the championship this season during the match.
With this win, Manchester United has moved to the top of Group F, with three out of five victories. Check out football highlights of Manchester United win over Villarreal in the Champions League as they advance to the last 16.
