Being on the back foot in the first half, PSG took the lead against Manchester City early in the second half when Lionel Messi’s deflected cross was completed by Kylian Mbappe. But the lead lasted just over 10 minutes, when City equalized through a shot from Raheem Sterling from a short distance – just a reward for City, who held on for most of the match.
And with 15 minutes to go, Gabriel Jesus took the win for the hosts after being bowled by Bernardo Silva in the PSG box. RB Leipzig’s 5–0 win against Club Brugge in the second group match means that both PSG and City are in the knockout stages.
The fun contest in Manchester – which faced the two best teams in the Champions League, both reaching the final of the competition in the last two seasons – came alive in the second half, when City controlled the first 45 minutes. Pep Guardiola’s team could have taken the lead in the first minutes of the football match, but Rodri’s header was deflected off the line by Presnel Kimpembe.
Then, in the middle of the first half, Man City had other chances, when a powerful shot from Ilkay Gundogan shook the bar, and Riyad Mahrez saved an effort from PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas. PSG had few chances and was suffocated by City’s passengers and high press, but in attack from Messi, Mbappe and Neymar, a goal in the distance always seemed a possibility.
That’s exactly what happened at the start of the second half when Messi broke to the left and focused it on Mbappe, who slipped a shot between Ederson’s legs to give PSG the advantage with the ninth goal of the season.
Man City continued to attack the PSG goal and hit back through Sterling after Kyle Walker’s cross passed Jesus and found the England striker on the back post. Neymar had a chance to take the lead on a dazzling drive from PSG to the left, but the opportunity was lost as his shot went over the bar after 73 minutes.
This proved to be a costly failure, as City took the lead a few moments later through a Jesus goal, giving his team a decent win. The match result means City has 12 points and is guaranteed to top the group with PSG on eight points.
