Champions League: Chelsea triumph over Juventus

Chelsea secured a triumph over Serie A heavyweights Juventus on Tuesday night and advanced to the last 16 of the Champions League with an emphatic win. The opening half was dominated by the Blues against a Bianconeri team that appeared to be looking for a point. Chelsea exploded into life midway through the half after controlling possession but unable to create much.

Reece James tried to catch Wojciech Szczesny off guard with a whipped free-kick to the near post, but Wojciech Szczesny made a fine save, and Trevoh Chalobah popped up to lash a loose ball into the top corner on the half-volley from the resultant corner. The goal remained after a VAR review for a push on Leonardo Bonucci and a handball by Antonio Rudiger.

Juventus almost equalized three minutes later in the football match, but Thiago Silva’s spectacular goal-line clearance denied Alvaro Morata, who had hoisted the ball over the onrushing Edouard Mendy. James put Szczesny to the test again before the interval, chesting the ball down and unleashing a stinging shot that the Pole tipped around the post.

Ten minutes after the break Chelsea extended their lead with James controlling a clearance on his chest before smashing home a shot that was nearly identical to the one that had been saved before half-time. The match score was 3-0 after three minutes. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was the architect, threading his way through the Juventus defense before laying it on a plate for Callum Hudson-Odoi, who side-footed home in acres of space with joy.

Both sides had late chances, with Edouard Mendy having to make his first major save, tipping Weston McKennie’s shot over, and Szczesny doing well to redirect Hakim Ziyech’s low effort over the post. The final goal of Chelsea was scored in the stoppage time. With a crazy cross-field pass to Ziyech, who sent a superb low ball across the box for Timo Werner to tap in, James was involved once more. To go top of Group H, the Blues needed to win by two goals, and they did just that.
