Barcelona’s Pique claims there are no favourites in El Clásico

On Sunday, Barcelona and Real Madrid renew their rivalry at Camp Nou in the first El Clásico of the season. According to Gerard Pique, there are “no favourites” heading into this weekend’s Clásico.

One could be forgiven for thinking Real Madrid are clear favourites going into the game given what has happened at Barcelona during the summer and this season. To brief Lionel Messi left Barcelona and completed a football transfer to PSG, while on the other hand Sergio Ramos also ended his 16 years stint at Real Madrid.

The sensations around Camp Nou haven’t been wonderful, whether it’s because of Lionel Messi’s departure, the financial situation, or the constant pressure on Ronald Koeman. With the two teams separated by just two points going into this game, and in any event, form doesn’t matter much in a Clásico, the league standings offers a different narrative, according to Pique.

“In a Clásico, you come in as equals, there are no favourites,” he said in his pre-match press conference according to the Daily Mail. “The Clásico is totally separate from the dynamics. We have had some moments of crisis, but we are recovering. We both arrive with quite similar dynamics.”

Pique also discussed his feelings regarding his second stint at Camp Nou, which has lasted more than 13 years. “It’s certain that with age when you have lived everything, you look a little for stability,” he added. “I am very happy, with my family and with the team. I keep the ‘rebel’ Gerard, but I am enjoying. There is little left and I want to enjoy it.”
