And now, the president has offered some insight into his reasons behind taking this decision.
Barcelona President Joan Laporta Updates Us on Firing Ronald Koeman
After Barcelona’s defeat to Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday night, Laporta fired Koeman.
The Dutchman has been in control since August 2020. But after months of Laporta and other management applying severe pressure, his reign has come to an almost inescapable conclusion.
The search for his replacement has already begun, while Sergi Barjuan acts as an interim manager. And former player and current Al-Sadd manager Xavi Hernandez may be the next to be in charge (latest football transfer news).
In the meantime, Joan Laporta has met with the players at the club’s Cuitat Esportiva training centre to motivate them.
Also, the chairman has finally commented on Ronald Koeman’s dismissal in his own personal capacity.
“We sacked Koeman after the Rayo [Vallecano] game,” Laporta stated, Mundo Deportivo reports.
Laporta then continued: “I’d like to point out that we are grateful to him for taking over the team at the most difficult time.
“He is a Barça legend and we will always remember him. He won the Copa del Rey but his recent results meant he couldn’t continue.
“The situation has been intolerable lately and he told me he understood it. The negotiations over his termination are going well. We will do our best for the both parties to be satisfied.”
The president concluded: “We, as a club, have a full confidence in Sergi [Barjuan] until the new coach takes the charge. We will continue our fight for La Liga and the Champions League.”
