Barcelona owes €115m in outstanding transfer payments

Barcelona owes Miralem Pjanic, Frenkie de Jong, Sergino Dest, and Philippe Coutinho €115m in outstanding transfer payments. With the club dramatically overspending in recent years Barça’s financial situation is dire. As a result of the dangerous scenario Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Antoine Griezmann have all recently departed the club. Their departures had a negative impact on the team’s performance. Barcelona won only three of their first seven La Liga games and suffering two 3-0 losses in the Champions League group stage, the club has had a poor start to the season.

Barça fans will be disappointed to learn that the team still owes a significant portion of the transfer costs for numerous of their underperforming players, according to Marca.

The biggest worry is the €39 million they still owe Juventus for Pjanic, whose signing – in exchange for Arthur Melo’s departure – has proven to be a disaster for all parties involved. Last season, the midfielder only made 19 La Liga games and has already been loaned out to Besiktas this season.

Barcelona also owes Ajax €32 million for De Jong, who joined the club in 2019 for an initial fee of €75 million. Dest, a fellow Ajax academy graduate, has also not had his transfer price paid in full. Barça must still pay €16 million for his services before the end of the 2023/24 season.

Coutinho will also be a headache for the club because €13 million of his eye-watering €160 million transfer fee is still owed to Liverpool, who have invested significantly more wisely in recent seasons. When Barcelona’s general director Fran Reverter speaks to the media on Wednesday, more facts about the club’s catastrophic finances are expected to be revealed.
