Barcelona failed to reach La Liga top after a defeat to Granada

Barcelona lost its chance to gain an edge in the Spanish Football League La Liga due to a 2–1 defeat to Granada. Lionel Messi gave Barcelona an early lead in the 23rd minute but Granada registered an upset win with two goals in the second half.

With Lionel Messi’s leading goal Barca seemed to be on track for a fifth consecutive home victory, it was a result decent enough to see them leapfrog both rival Real Madrid and long-time leaders Atletico Madrid in the standings.

In the 63rd minute, Darwin Machis equalized before Ronald Koeman was sent off, forcing the Dutchman to watch from the stands as Jorge Molina scored a 79th-minute winner.

Messi was less clinical with a one-on-one chance later in the first half, and Griezmann, too, struggled to capitalize when faced with a good sight of goal shortly after the break, shooting wide with his right foot.

Barcelona enabled their competitors to score with their only two shots on goal, resulting in a massive shock and the surprising result was not prophesied.

As Barca failed to make their superiority count, Granada made them pay to seal a win that would surely be celebrated in the Spanish capital.

Barcelona now has 71 points from 33 matches and remains third after Atlético Madrid (73 points from 33 matches) and Real Madrid (71 points from 33 matches) as before. Granada has reached 45 points in 33 matches and remains in eighth place.
