Louis van Gaal indicated that Memphis Depay, who is Barcelona’s goal, might not be exactly what his old club wants.
Memphis Depay is a promising player who can give a lot but Barcelona has been cautioned by Louis van Gaal that not all of their problems will be solved by the Lyon forward.
The 27-year-old is a priority for the LaLiga giants, where former Dutch head coach Ronald Koeman is in charge following the dismissal of Quique Setien.
Dutchman Depay has scored and assisted a combined 63 goals in three full seasons at the Groupama Stadium under the coaching of Van Gaal at Manchester United and after a frustrating spell Dutchman Depay has resurrected his career at Lyon.
But Van Gaal said Barca wouldn’t be having Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo as a world-class player of similar caliber. He has also coached Depay for the Netherlands national side.
“There’s always a question mark,” he told Tuttomercatoweb. “Depay is an interesting player, especially when he’s free to play.”
“But we have to consider adapting to a new culture and a new team. And the first year is always the hardest. Look at [Matthijs] de Ligt or Frenkie de Jong.”
“Depay has talent, but he’s not Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.”
