Atletico Madrid holds La Liga top spot playing a goalless draw with Barcelona

Atlético Madrid maintained their lead in the La Liga football tournament by stopping Barcelona in a tie of no goals on Saturday. Atletico Madrid, the top team of the Spanish League La Liga, played a goalless draw on Saturday as they visited Camp Now Stadium with second-placed Barcelona. Following this draw, Barcelona lost its chance to top the table, while Atlético Madrid retained their top position and manager Ronald Koeman’s side held a two-point lead. Atletico played well during the match but failed to capitalize on their chances while Luis Suarez also failed to score against his former club Barcelona.

Apart from this, Barcelona star striker Lionel Messi also got many chances to score goals during the match but he also failed to capitalize on it. At the end of the first half, Messi hit a brilliant shot piercing Atletico’s defense line. But Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak defended the goal in an equally tremendous way. After this Messi also got a free kick in the 90th minute of the match, which he could not convert into a goal. Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo scored in the 70th minute but was declared off-side.

The Atlético team remained on top with 77 points in 35 matches. Real Madrid’s team is currently in third place with 74 points from 34 matches. Barcelona is in second place with 75 points from 35 matches. Messi has this final chance to win the league title with Barcelona as this star striker’s contract with the club is running out and he said last year that he wanted to leave the club.

In other matches, Alaves held Levante to a 2–2 draw, thanks to Joselu’s 87th-minute goal. Cadiz beat Huesca 2–1. On the other hand, Espanyol ensured Spain’s return to the first division with a goalless draw from Zaragoza. The team is six ahead of second-placed Majorca while 12 points ahead of third-ranked Almeria. The top two teams will automatically get a place in the first division.
