AS Roma appointed Jose Mourinho as new coach

Italian football AS Roma announced on Tuesday that the club has appointed Jose Mourinho as their head coach. Mourinho will have a tenure of three years and will replace Paulo Fonseca. The club has given information about this. Mourinho, 58, was previously head coach of English Premier League (EPL) club Tottenham Hotspur, but Hotspur sacked Mourinho from his position only last month.

The Rome club announced Paulo Fonseca’s departure at the end of the season. Mourinho had already worked in Italy with Inter, winning two Scudetto’s, the country’s Cup and Supercup as well as the Champions League.

Roma President Dan Friedkin said in a statement, “We are very pleased to welcome Jose Mourinho to the AS Roma family. He is a brilliant champion who has won the trophy at every level. Jose provides tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project.”

Portugal’s Mourinho has also coached Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Chelsea. He thanked the Friedkin family for choosing him to lead this great club and to be part of their vision.

Mourinho told the club’s official website, “After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.”

“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season. In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”, he added.

Jose Mourinho said that he aims to ‘create a winning project’ at Roma and that the Gialloross was chosen because of the ‘incredible enthusiasm of the fans.’ The Portuguese coach, who has won nearly 25 big titles in his career, has signed a contract until the summer of 2024 and will start before the start of the 2021/22 season.

Roma won their previous title in the Serie-A League in 2001. The team suffered a 2–6 defeat to Manchester United in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals last week.
