Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has recently revealed on his official social media account that he contracted malaria while playing for Gabon. He was out of the Arsenal squad for the past two matches but now it has been known that he was hospitalized for malaria treatment. Aubameyang diagnosed malaria when on international break and missed Gunners’ 4-0 win over Slavia in Europa League quarters.
“Hello everyone, thanks for the messages and calls. Unfortunately, I contracted malaria when I played for the national team in Gabon a few weeks ago. I spent a few days in hospital this week but I am feeling much better every day,” Aubameyang wrote on Instagram.
“Thanks to the excellent doctors who discovered the virus so quickly and started treatment immediately. I haven’t felt very well in the last couple of weeks, but I’m coming back stronger than ever!”
“Going to watch my lads match now. A very important game for us! Go for it, do it.”
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta gave a health update of Aubameyang as diagnosed with malaria. The Spanish coach said that captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is completely fine after struggling with illness and spent a few days in the hospital. Striker’s comeback is still uncertain as Arteta didn’t give a confirmed return date.
“We just spoke with him. He’s at home, he’s fine,” The Spanish head coach told reporters. “He had two days in the hospital to get the right treatment, but he’s feeling good now.”
“We will see how he recovers. I think he will need a few days to recover from that, but he wants to be back as soon as possible. That’s what he said to me.”
“It is what it is, these things happen. He traveled to his country and he picked it up and you know that these risks always exist.”
Arsenal won against Slavia in the return leg of the Europa League quarter-final. The first game ended 1-1. The Gunners will face Villareal on 29th April 2021 for the semi-finals.
