Andrea Agnelli: difficult times for football, time to think seriously about the future

Andrea Agnelli, Juventus president has addressed the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the economics of football.

“We still don’t fully understand what has happened to our industry, what this crisis means for clubs. Deloitte has reported losses of two billion euros over these two seasons, but I fear it could be more,” Agnelli said during an eThinkSport2021 webinar.

“Last season we had empty stadiums, commercial discounts, and discounts for broadcasters for only 3-4 months. This season, on the other hand, will be entirely without fans in the stands.”

“As for television rights, in Germany, the losses have been 10%, international broadcasters are not paying their debts.”

“This is why I think that this season will be even worse. We believe that the cumulative losses of our industry over the two seasons will be between 6.5 and 8.5 billion euros.”

“The analysis is relevant for the top leagues. What is happening in the lower (second, third, amateur) divisions in terms of personnel losses, infrastructure… These are very difficult times for football, we need to think seriously about the future.”
