A tie between Arsenal and Southampton in Premier League match

Southampton left the Emirates Stadium with a point, but could have thought they should have done more against ten men.

The men of Arteta managed at least to escape a record fifth home league loss in a row, but they were undermined by indiscipline as they had begun to display promising signs and must eventually count themselves fortunate to hang on to a point, as has become something of a habit.

As they lost points for a sixth consecutive Premier League match, Arsenal did little to ease the pressure on Mikel Arteta and had a player sent off again on Wednesday in a 1-1 home draw with Southampton.

The urgency of Southampton fell and Arsenal restored parity early in the second half through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with the Gabon striker breaking an 11-match run without an open-play goal.

Initially, Arsenal struggled to get to grips with Southampton and in the latter stages of the first phase only really began to deliver a challenge of their own at that point, former Gunner Theo Walcott had already provided a justified lead to the visitors.

But when Gabriel Magalhaes was given Arsenal’s seventh red card – four more than any other Premier League club – since Arteta’s first game in charge, their hopes of returning to winning ways in the league were dashed.
