Everton wins their first Premier League game of the season, beating West Ham United 1-0.

The game took a long time to get going, with neither side showing a big threat in the first half.

After the break, Everton came out quickly and Maupay thumped a shot into the near post for his first Toffees goal.

West Ham pushed for an equaliser and hit the post through substitute Benrahma’s whipped effort, but they couldn’t find a way through.

Starting lineup:

EVERTON STARTING XI (4-3-3): Asmir Begovic; Nathan Patterson, Conor Coady, James Tarkowski, Vitalii Mykolenko; Idrissa Gueye, Amadou Onana, Alex Iwobi; Demarai Gray, Neal Maupay, Anthony Gordon.

EVERTON SUBS: Michael Keane, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Tom Davies, Ruben Vinagre, James Garner, Eldin Jakupovic, Dwight McNeil, Salomon Rondon, Seamus Coleman.

WEST HAM STARTING XI (3-4-2-1): Lukasz Fabianski; Thilo Kehrer, Kurt Zouma, Aaron Cresswell; Vladimir Coufal, Tomas Soucek, Declan Rice, Pablo Fornals; Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio; Lucas Paqueta.

WEST HAM SUBS: Emerson, Maxwel Cornet, Said Benrahma, Gianluca Scamacca, Angelo Ogbonna, Flynn Downes, Craig Dawson, Alphonse Areola, Manuel Lanzini.

Goal:

MAUPAY SCORES! He’s in between three West Ham defenders when Iwobi slides the ball into him, but he controls it on the turn and takes the shot quickly. Fabianski scrambles across his line, but can’t stop it from nestling in the bottom corner for his first Everton goal. 1-0 Everton!

Frank Lampard post-match interview:

“We brought him in for that reason. He’s a proven Premier League scorer. We played some games early season with false nines, trying to find solutions.

“There were times in games with that bit of clinical finishing, we would have got more points. How close he kept that first touch and how quickly he shot is why he scored.

“It’s a fantastic goal. A goalscorer’s goal. the first touch is clinical, and it’s not easy to keep it tight and get your shot away. You rely on that feeling of a striker, and we maybe draw that game if Neal isn’t there.

“You can see we’ve added a lot in the dressing room. We have to be hard to beat.”

So, what’s next?

That win lifts Everton to 13th in the table, and they have a trip to Southampton after the international break.

West Ham is now winless in their last three league matches and stays in the relegation zone. Next up for them is Wolves at home.
