Man City cruises past Burnley 2-0 in the Premier League

There were no goals in that second half, but Man City won’t care as their two in the first see them go back to the top of the table with a 2-0 victory.

Burnley offered a little more attacking threat in that half, but nothing to trouble City, who probably should’ve added to their lead given the plethora of chances.

Alas, Liverpool’s time at the top of the tree was short-lived, and with this win, City top the pile once again.

Starting Lineup:

BURNLEY (4-5-1): Nick Pope;

Connor Roberts, Kevin Long, James Tarkowski, Charlie Taylor;

Aaron Lennon, Jack Cork, Ashley Westwood, Josh Brownhill, Dwight McNeil; Wout Weghorst.

BURNLEY SUBS: Wayne Hennessey, Will Norris, Matt Lowton, Ashley Barnes, Dale Stephens, Jay Rodriguez, Maxwel Cornet, Bobby Thomas, Owen Dodgson.

MAN CITY (4-3-3): Ederson;

Kyle Walker, Nathan Ake, Aymeric Laporte, Joao Cancelo;

Kevin de Bruyne, Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan;

Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish.

MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: Zack Steffen, John Stones, Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Riyad Mahrez, CJ Egan-Riley, Luke Mbete.

City, take the lead!!! Rodri floats a diagonal pass wide to Sterling, whose volley back inside bounces before De Bruyne arrives to smash it beyond Pope and into the back of the net! Precisely the start the champions wanted, and it’s 1-0 after just five minutes!

City doubles their lead!!! A lovely one-two between De Bruyne and Sterling sends the latter steaming down the right, and he cuts the ball back to Gundogan, whose half-volley wrong-foots Pope and rolls into the back of the net! 2-0, and it looks like the game is over, even at this early stage.

So, what’s next?

City is now back in first place in the table, but with only a point in it and the two sides’ goal difference separated by just five, this title race will only get more enthralling.

Burnley was second best by some distance and remain the second bottom.

They’ve got games in hand on either side of the teams but have played once more than Everton now, and time is running out to keep their fate in their own hands.
