According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United transfer target Darwin Nunez will ‘100 per cent’ leave Benfica this summer.
Romano told his Here We Go podcast that Nunez made his mind to leave the Portuguese club.
Nunez scored 34 goals for Benfica in all competitions, including the strike which knocked Erik ten Hag’s Ajax out of the Champions League.
A Bola has reported United scouted Nunez, and The Athletic claim the Red Devils are among the front runners to sign him.
Darwin Nunez will ‘100 per cent’ leave.
Romano explained: “He had an incredible season. He made a decision. He is going to leave Benfica this summer, 100 per cent.
“I see many rumours about him, but I am told the Premier League really tempts him. He would love a Premier League move.
“This summer, let’s see what happens. Many clubs are interested, but Manchester United discussed his name internally many times, so I would keep the name Darwin Nunez for Manchester United. He is a player for sure, who is on the list.”
Romano’s comments contradict a French outlet RMC Sport’s claim that Nunez has rejected a move to the Premier League.
Manchester United are still in with a shout of securing Nunez’s signature.
If this is the route, Erik ten Hag decides to go down.
Last week, the Athletic claimed Nunez could cost as little as £51 million, which would be a very good fee to get him for, if possible, but his release clause is twice the price.
If Nunez insists on a move and narrows down a choice of clubs, he will hold the cards rather than Benfica.
Manchester United need a striker, with Edinson Cavani leaving, and Nunez is his long term replacement for Uruguay.
Another option is Lille forward Jonathan David, with CBS Sports reporting he is a player who interests Ten Hag.
