Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

It finishes goalless between Brentford and Tottenham. The hosts created better chances throughout the game, with Toney coming closest through two headers which hit the bar and the post.

Jansson also had an effort cleared off the line by Kane before Lloris denied Eriksen.

Spurs didn’t manage a shot on target for the second game running, but Kane had a late chance to snatch the three points – his bicycle kick bounced wide.

BRENTFORD STARTING XI (4-3-3): David Raya; Mads Roerslev Rasmussen, Pontus Jansson, Mads Bech Sorensen, Rico Henry; Vitaly Janelt, Mathias Jensen, Christian Eriksen; Bryan Mbuemo, Ivan Toney, Saman Ghoddos.

Eriksen, the star of the show for Brentford:

Much of the pre-match focus was understandably on Eriksen as he continues his remarkable return to English football.

The 30-year-old, who made 305 appearances in a six-and-a-half-year spell with Tottenham, was seen hugging some of his former teammates in the tunnel before kick-off and was given a standing ovation by the Spurs fans when he went to take an early corner in front of the away section.

He was then given an equally raucous ovation by both fans at full time and signed a Tottenham fans’ shirt.

That contributed to a relaxed atmosphere on a sunny spring evening in west London.

Brentford went into the game 11 points clear of the bottom three and closed in on Premier League safety after a run of five wins from six games.

That revival owes a lot to the arrival of Eriksen, who had been on the winning side in all five of the games he had previously started for the club.

The winning run ended here, but it is still a valuable point that guarantees a second season in the League.

With Eriksen’s short-term contract expiring at the end of the campaign, securing his long-term future is likely high on Thomas Frank’s to-do list as the Brentford boss begins planning for next season.

So, what’s next?

Spurs miss the chance to leapfrog Arsenal back into fourth place, and they stay in fifth, two points behind their North London rivals. Next up for them is Leicester City.

Brentford is now unbeaten in their last four games, and they move up to 11th. They travel to Manchester United for their next game.
