On Tuesday evening, in the last-16 round of Euro 2020, longtime rivals England and Germany renew hostilities at Wembley Stadium for a quarter-century after their infamous match at Euro 96. The Three Lions finished first in Group D, tying with Germany for second place in the tournament’s death group. Here is all you need to know about England vs Germany prediction and lineup for Euro 2020 football match tonight.

Team news

England lineup: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Phillips; Foden, Grealish, Sterling; Kane

Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount will be free from their 10-day quarantine for England’s round-of-16 match against Germany. The major question is would Gareth Southgate start mount on starting spot after he has missed all of the team’s pre-match training.

Despite not having used it this year, Southgate is thought to be seriously considering a back three against Germany. As a result, Kyle Walker will drop into the back three, with Reece James and Luke Shaw vying for the wing-back spot. Kieran Trippier is slated to start with Mount certain to be selected on the bench.

A back three implies doom for Jack Grealish, with Phil Foden or Bukayo Saka highly expected to join Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling in the front three.

Germany lineup: Neuer; Ginter, Hummels, Rudiger; Kimmich, Kroos, Goretzka, Gosens; Havertz, Muller; Gnabry

Thomas Muller, who had been ruled out against Hungary, made a surprise appearance off the bench.

Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan, and Serge Gnabry were all fit to play despite being doubts ahead into Wednesday’s encounter.

For Monday’s match, both Jonas Hofmann and Lukas Klostermann are questionable although neither would have started anyway.

To save Germany against Hungary, Leon Goretzka came off the bench last time out, but finding a spot for him in the team is difficult.

England vs Germany Prediction

In over four years, England and Germany meet for the first time after a dismal goalless stalemate at the end of 2017.

Without surrendering a goal England made it through the group stage, but their performance has been woeful.

Germany was fortunate to even make it out of the group stage. They had to come from behind twice to tie 2-2 with Hungary in their final game.

Although progressing through the group stage without conceding a goal is a positive sign, Germany’s attackers are slightly more potent than the Czechs or Croats. We’d want to back England to win, but in a narrative as old as time, the Germans’ winning mindset should shine through as the Three Lions’ second chance at glory goes begging.

Our Prediction: England 1 – 1 Germany (1 – 2 after extra time)
