Napoli paid tribute to Diego Armando Maradona tonight, and Dries Mertens acknowledges that it was ‘hard to put that shirt on’.

The team went out for the Europa League game against Rijeka, everyone wearing the Maradona 10 shirt, while his funeral was taking place in Buenos Aires.

To lay flowers and sing the name of El Pibe de Oro thousands of fans had assembled outside at the gates of what will now be named the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

“It was an awful moment for me, so I can only imagine how those who lived through his time at Napoli must have felt,” Mertens told Sky Sport Italia.

“He made such a big impact on this city and for everyone in the south of Italy. I want to be positive, and focus on my memories of a smiling man who loved football.”

Writing about football is one of my favorite things to do. As a football writer, I love the rush of being in the stadium on game day and watching all the action live. It's like no other feeling for me. I'm passionate about writing about it, but until recently I've been doing it as a hobby rather than a profession.
