On Wednesday night when Chelsea and Villarreal face off in the UEFA Super Cup, the European season kicks off at Windsor Park in Belfast. Last season, Thomas Tuchel led the Blues to Champions League glory, while serial Europa League winner Unai Emery was up to his old tricks in Europe’s secondary competition. Here is everything you need to know about Chelsea vs Villarreal prediction, team news, and lineup for 2021 UEFA Super Cup.

Team news

Jorginho, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Mason Mount, Reece James, and Ben Chilwell are all in the squad for Wednesday’s game, but this will be their first appearance in pre-season after long absences.

Kurt Zouma could be used in the meantime while other center-backs work their way back to full fitness, although he is still being linked with a move away from Chelsea.

Villarreal’s summer signings Boulaye Dia and Aissa Mandi will be hoping to play for Europa League champions.

Pau Torres will be absent after representing Spain in both Euro 2020 and the Olympics.

Samuel Chukwueze is unlikely to play due to a hamstring injury sustained at the end of last season.

In a pre-season football match, Dani Parejo suffered a calf injury and it’s unclear whether he’ll be able to play here, with Manu Morlanes set to fill in.

Etienne Capoue, Francis Coquelin, Geronimo Rulli, and Vicente Iborra may miss out due to a COVID-19 scare in the Villarreal camp.

Chelsea vs Villarreal Prediction

The UEFA Super Cup match is between Champions League winners Chelsea and Europa League champions Villarreal

Villarreal have lost all six of their preseason games, drawing with Leeds and losing to Leicester.

Out of three pre-season games, Chelsea has won two, most recently letting a 2-0 lead against Tottenham slip away to draw 2-2.

Villarreal and Emery have the experience to beat English opponents, having defeated Manchester United and Arsenal last year, but their pre-season form has raised some concerns. We can’t see anything other than another European triumph for Chelsea, even if they are far from full strength.

Chelsea possible starting lineup:

Mendy; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Rudiger; Hudson-Odoi, Kovacic, Kante, Alonso; Ziyech, Werner; Havertz

Villarreal possible starting lineup:

Asenjo; Gaspar, Foyth, Albiol, Pedraza; Yeremy, Morlanes, Trigueros, Dia; Moreno, Alcacer

Our Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Villarreal

Writing about football is one of my favorite things to do. As a football writer, I love the rush of being in the stadium on game day and watching all the action live. It's like no other feeling for me. I'm passionate about writing about it, but until recently I've been doing it as a hobby rather than a profession.
