Chelsea sign Atletico Madrid starin £10m loan deal. Joao Felix, a Portuguese player who had been playing for Atletico Madrid, has been signed by Chelsea on a season-long loan. As they both look to bolster their attacking lineups, Manchester United and Arsenal were reportedly leading the race for Felix’s signature at one point. However, Premier League powerhouses from west London have reportedly struck a deal at a reputed £10 million ($12m).
Felix expressed his happiness at the move to Chelsea’s official website, saying: “Chelsea is one of the best teams in the world, and I hope to assist the team to achieve its goals. Therefore, I am very, very glad to be here and extremely thrilled to play at Stamford Bridge.”
Felix will return to Wanda Metropolitano in the summer because Chelsea’s contract with Atletico Madrid does not include a buy option. After spending €126 million (£111 million/$135 million) to woo the 23-year-old away from Benfica in 2019, La Liga heavyweights are still hesitant to let him go permanently. As a result, they negotiated a new contract before approving a temporary move to England. Atletico has officially announced that Felix has extended his contract with the team through the year 2027.
After sending Romelu Lukaku back on loan to Inter last summer, Chelsea will be hoping that Felix, who has 28 international caps to his name, can quickly adapt to his new surroundings. This is because in 2022–23, players like Kai Havertz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have struggled to provide an attacking spark.
