Shevchenko praises Swiatek, Lewandowski and Zinchenko

The legendary Andriy Shevchenko of Ukraine thanked the people of Poland for their assistance during the conflict with Russia and praised athletes Iga Swiatek and Robert Lewandowski for their efforts.

Shevchenko, a representative for Laureus Sport for Good, shocked war refugees by paying a surprise visit to a Warsaw school.

Following Russia’s invasion, the entire globe came together to support Ukraine, with celebrities and athletes utilising their platforms to spread awareness of the situation there.

Shevchenko was a special guest during a charity tennis event that Swiatek, the top player in the WTA, organised on Saturday.

At the same time, Lewandowski has been vocal in his support.

This season, he will wear a Barcelona shirt with the UNHCR, the primary UN organisation for refugees.

Shevchenko hailed Poland as a country for accepting a wave of refugees from its European neighbours after visiting Warsaw.

He said, as per Laureus Sport for Good:

“I want to thank you, [the] Polish people, for being very kind to my country. For hosting us here. To provide all the needs.

“Thank you so much for your support. Also, I want to thank Iga Swiatek and Robert Lewandowski for taking a big part in initiatives helping my country to raise funds and support against the war in Ukraine.”

Shevchenko also praised compatriot Oleksandr Zinchenko for speaking out against the war, something numerous Ukrainian athletes have done.

He added of Zinchenko, who last week signed for Arsenal from Premier League champions Manchester City:

“Like many, everyone Ukrainian, his reaction against the war, he stood up and then spoke loudly.

“He expressed his view, his hard feelings against the war for Ukraine because he loves Ukraine.

“And we did a lot of activities together. We’ve been involved in a few fundraisers. I know he’s very generous and did a lot for Ukrainian people.”
