Marco Rose and Reus shared their thoughts on the game

Marco Rose: “It felt as though we were never in the game.”

Marco Rose was naturally disappointed after Borussia Dortmund’s 2-5 loss to Bayer Leverkusen.

Borussia Dortmund coach Marco Rose has shared his thoughts on his side’s disappointing 2-5 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

“It felt as though we were never in the game. But, then, in the spells that we did have, Leverkusen quickly pulled the rug from underneath us again,” said Rose after the game on Sunday.

“The defeat is bitter. The boys invested a lot, but they had to make sure they didn’t get hit on the counter again.

“We didn’t show enough composure and clarity on the ball in the first half.

“In addition, we hardly had any shots on goal. With that in mind, it was a deserved victory for Leverkusen.

“We will analyse things and push on with our development. Setbacks are part of development.

“And we’re working on this. We have to take the next steps together as a team. Consistency is the keyword.”

Reus rues “catastrophic day” as Leverkusen thrash Dortmund

Bayer Leverkusen beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2 away from home and Marco Reus is frustrated with his team’s poor performance and inconsistency.

Marco Reus has labelled Borussia Dortmund’s heavy 5-2 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen “a catastrophic day” for the club.

The sides traded early own goals, but Dortmund was 3-1 down by the 28th minute and then conceded twice more in the second half before Steffen Tigges’ late consolation.

After six wins in a row in this fixture, BVB were beaten at home by Leverkusen for the first time since 2014.

And conceded five at home to their North Rhine-Westphalia rivals for the first time.

Leverkusen had never previously netted more than three in Dortmund.

Dortmund matched Leverkusen in terms of expected goals, with both teams creating chances worth 1.86 ×G, but Reus was not looking for excuses.

Although his side remains second in the Bundesliga, they are now nine points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

“It’s a catastrophic day for us,” Reus told SkySports.

“We didn’t get into the game well and were a step too late in every situation.

“Dortmund then [allowed] counter-attacks, even though we agreed before the game that that’s their strength.

“They will punish us for that. It was just not enough today.

“We didn’t implement the guidelines we prepared [before] the game for two weeks and worked on a lot.

“Dortmund always say the same thing and then have to bring it onto the pitch. But, unfortunately, we didn’t manage that today.

“A very bitter day, we didn’t deserve [to win] today. It was bad overall.”
