Freiburg 1- 4 Bayern Munich

For the most part, a tightly contested affair between Freiburg and Bayern Munich as the game entered the final 20 minutes on level terms and with the game’s outcome still in the balance.

However, the addition of some added quality from the Bayern bench saw the visitors cut through a tiring Freiburg side on several occasions afterwards, and the champions ultimately ran out of comfortable winners.

Coman and ‘super sub’ Gnabry were the chief instigators in Bayern’s second-half showing.

While the home side crumbled with the prospect of a point insight.

Starting Lineup:

FREIBURG (3-4-2-1): Mark Flekken;

Nico Schlotterbeck, Philipp Lienhart, Manuel Gulde;

Jonathan Schmid, Maximilian Eggestein, Nicolas Hofler, Christian Gunter;

Vincenzo Grifo, Lucas Holer; Roland Sallai.

BAYERN MUNICH (4-2-3-1): Manuel Neuer;

Benjamin Pavard, Tanguy Kouassi, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez;

Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka; Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman; Robert Lewandowski.

Goals:

BAYERN LEAD! From a free-kick on the left side of the area, 30 yards out, Kimmich curls in a high cross, which is met by the forehead of Goretzka just ahead of Flekken, and the ball nestle into the back of the net! It has taken a set-piece to unlock this stubborn Freiburg side, but Bayern now carries a 1-0 lead.

FREIBURG EQUALISE! Former Bayern man Petersen strikes, just moments after springing from the bench, as he stepped onto a cute reverse pass by Gunter to turn the ball coolly past Neuer and into the bottom-left corner. So Freiburg is back on level terms at 1-1.

BAYERN IS BACK IN FRONT! Incredibly, another ‘super sub’ strike puts the visitors 2-1 up, as Gnabry’s first intervention since leaving the bench sees him pounce on a Schlotterbeck slip to take Hernandez’s crossfield pass before confidently firing past the stranded Flekken.

3-1 BAYERN! Coman strikes the decisive blow indeed, as he takes the ball into his stride with consummate ease and powers a low shot past Flekken at the Dutch keeper’s near post. However, that was no more than the Bayern winger’s performance deserved, as he has shone brightly today.

BAYERN BAG FOUR! Gnabry’s close-range shot is saved low down by the exposed Flekken before the Bayern forward re-gathers the ball and combines with Sane to try again. The ball ultimately breaks to Sabitzer near the penalty spot, and the substitute does not have to be asked twice before slipping the ball into an unguarded net.

So, what’s next?

Having sealed another three points in the Bundesliga, Bayern can now turn to next week’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash against Villarreal.

Though their top-four hopes have taken a heavy blow today, Freiburg will have one eye on their DFB-Pokal semi-final against Hamburg later this month as they bid to reach the final for the very first time.
