Sir Bobby Charlton has been diagnosed with dementia, he is the British World Cup winner and Manchester United legend.
The news follows the deaths in July of his elder brother Jack and on Friday of fellow World Cup champion Nobby Stiles, all of whom were also diagnosed with dementia.
Sir Bobby, 83, won three league titles, one European Cup and one FA Cup with United during his 17 years of career at Old Trafford.
Through spells at Preston and the Irish side of Waterford, he ended his career.
The Telegraph mentioned that his wife Lady Norma Charlton shared the expectation that the knowledge of his condition could benefit others.
In 1958 and again in 1959, Sir Bobby finished second in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. In 2008, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
