Borussia Dortmund hopes to make Erling Haaland the highest-paid player in the club’s history with a new deal that will keep him at the club beyond next summer. Haaland’s current contract has three years left with the German football club, but it also includes a £70 million release clause that kicks in in 2022, which will be viewed as a steal by every major club on the planet.

The stay of Erling Haaland at Borussia Dortmund till next summer is not guaranteed, but it’s evident that the Bundesliga heavyweights are under siege from the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Barcelona, who are all circling. According to Sport Bild, Dortmund is seeking to spoil the party by handing Haaland a world-record-breaking new contract, albeit they’ll need some help from primary sponsors PUMA to do so.

In January 2022 Haaland’s contract with Nike is slated to expire, which means he’ll be free to pursue other opportunities. He’s anticipated to be sought by PUMA, who want to strengthen their ties with Dortmund by signing the club’s superstar player.

PUMA has been in conversation with agent Mino Raiola and Haaland’s father, Alf-Inge, about the prospect of a deal, with a five-year contract for €5 million on the table. PUMA owns a 5% share in Dortmund. Dortmund is trying hard to execute and propose an offer to the 21-year-old a new deal earning nearly twice as much as his current €8 million (£6.8 million) per year as part of PUMA’s outreach to Haaland.

To persuade Haaland to stay beyond next summer Dortmund is offering a club-record €15 million (£12.7 million). Dortmund knows they’re up against it to keep Haaland, but with the help of PUMA, they’re willing to do whatever it takes to close the deal.

Writing about football is one of my favorite things to do. As a football writer, I love the rush of being in the stadium on game day and watching all the action live. It's like no other feeling for me. I'm passionate about writing about it, but until recently I've been doing it as a hobby rather than a profession.
