Despite already being the owner of a Ballon d’Or, Karim Benzema thinks he will never rank higher than Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo in Real Madrid mythology. The 34-year-old France international was crowned the world’s best player for 2022 after scoring 44 goals during last season’s La Liga and Champions League championship campaigns. Benzema has been the club captain for the past 13 years at Santiago Bernabeu, but he acknowledges that he will never match the accomplishments of the legendary players and coaches he has played with and trained under.

Benzema has stated, I’m not above Zizou and Ronaldo, we’re different, on the official Real Madrid website. They serve as role models, and while I can’t match what they performed on the field, they encourage me to try. I’ll never perform at their level. I just completed that, and they just won the Ballon d’Or. But it’s challenging to compete on their level.

The Blancos striker Benzema says he has no desire to compare himself to historical figures because he is content with his own accomplishments. He continues, I’ve achieved my three life goals to buy a house for my mother, to join Real Madrid because it is the greatest club in the world, and the third was to win the Ballon d’Or. I’m quite pleased with my work.

With 44 goals for the entire season, Karim Benzema was the leading scorer in both the Champions League (15) and La Liga (27) in 21-22. After Puskas (2) and Cristiano Ronaldo, he is the third Real Madrid player to attain this milestone in a single campaign (7). Benzema has scored goals in each of his past two games, victories over Barcelona and Elche, and he’ll be hoping to help Real maintain their lead in the Liga standings when they host Sevilla on Saturday.
