Barcelona may end the contract for defender Jordi Alba. According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona is ready to sever Jordi Alba‘s affiliation with the club in the summer of 2023. Just before the season was suspended for the FIFA World Cup in 2022, Gerard Pique’s contract was canceled earlier this month. On November 6, he made his final league appearance in a 2-0 victory over UD Almeria. Since the summer, when they reached an agreement to transfer Alba to Inter Milan, Barca has been eager to move the player. The athlete, though, was unwilling to reach a personal agreement with the Italian powerhouses.

The contract for Alba, 33, expires in the summer of 2024. He committed to a five-year contract with the team in 2019, but it is clear that he is no longer needed. Manager Xavi Hernandez prefers Alejandro Balde and Marcos Alonso as alternatives down that side, but Alba has recently been given considerable playing time. Balde has been forced to play down the right wing due to the team’s lack of a strong right back. Due to Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde’s fitness issues, Alonso has been filling in as a central defender in the meantime.

The former Valencia left-back has two assists in 12 games for Barcelona this season in all competitions. This was sufficient to persuade manager Luis Enrique to choose him for Spain’s 26-man FIFA World Cup team. Alba’s potential value appears to be underappreciated by Barcelona, who are ready to move him the following season. Alba is allegedly eager to meet with the club in January to talk about the possibility of ending his contract one year before its expiration date in the summer. If Alba were to become a free agent, it wouldn’t be surprising to see several elite clubs competing for his services given his background and skills.

Following Pique’s departure, Alba acknowledged that he desired a send-off comparable to that of his Barcelona teammate. In the 84th minute, the experienced Spanish player was replaced by Andreas Christensen, and he gave the former Valencia left-back the captain’s armband. Alba declared, “I would also like to have a farewell like Pique’s when I leave,” after the game. Barcelona welcomed Alba in the summer of that year. He has been the team’s best option along the left side of their defense ever since. Throughout his 373 club appearances, he has won four La Liga championships and one UEFA Champions League.
