Lewandowski acknowledges that Barcelona “failed to defend” against Inter as they battle for a last-six position in the Champions League.

In a Champions League tie with Inter that might have lost them a berth in the round of 16, Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona has acknowledged that they neglected to defend. After being held at home by Serie A powerhouses, the Liga giants are on the verge of failing to advance to the final stages of elite European competition. Ousmane Dembele gave Xavi’s team the lead, but they went behind twice more before a stoppage-time equalizer from Lewandowski gave them a lifeline on the continent.

After witnessing costly mistakes result in three goals being given up in a vital game, the dynamic Polish forward told reporters, “We had so much wanted to score that we forgot to defend. In order for one of us to lose coverage, we attempted to attack with additional players. Although we scored three goals, we also gave up three. We are disappointed that we did not succeed. We lacked composure and cool blood.”

Barca now needs help from other sources to continue playing in the Champions League in 2022–23, as they run the possibility of being demoted to the Europa League if they finish third in Group C behind Bayern Munich and Inter. “Regarding the difficulties the Blaugrana are facing”, Lewandowski continued by saying; Surely we have seen many injuries in the team in the recent instances, however, it is not that simple to change the lineup you have created after a lot of work. We are unstable.”

The UEFA Champions League group stage match between Barcelona and Inter is to be considered like a final, according to Xavi, the team’s head coach. This season, Lewandowski has scored 14 goals in all competitions. In terms of goals among players from the top five European leagues, only Erling Haaland (20) has more. Lewandowski and his teammates’ situation is unlikely to improve as they still have Sunday’s Clasico match against Real Madrid to look forward to.
